McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SPHERE-ROL

All the inherent advantages of a single row spherical roller bearing are retained by McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SB series SPHERE-ROL bearings. Integrated sealing is also an alternative with these bearings. ROLLWAY® double row spherical bearings are available in all common double row sizes and combinations. A choice of either straight or tapered bore is provided. Other styles include different retainer and clearance options.

McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SPHERE-ROL Headings feature an optimal width of single row spherical rollers separated by a land riding steel retainer within a dimensionally opposite (ABMA/ISO specification) envelope. In addition, SPHERE-ROL heading feature NYLAPLATE®, NYLAPLATE high temperature and LAMBDA® seal options and misalignment capabilities, facilitate distinguishing SPHERE-ROL orientation from other types. The bearing design and use of reduced bore with adapter option provide diametrical clearance control and installation convenience. Depending on your preference, these bearings are available in a broad range of sizes, clearances and mounting options.

McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SPHERE-ROL Selection Guide

Highlighted Features of McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings:

Spherical RollerMcGILL SPHERE-ROL Spherical Roller
Precision spherical rollers provide high radial load capability, while providing the space necessary for seal options within a standard envelope dimension. The design of the roller provides a higher dynamic load rating and optimizes the number of maximum diameter rollers.

Annular Lubrication Groove and HolesMcGILL SPHERE-ROL Annular Lubrication Groove and Holes
The groove provides a circumferential path to direct lubricant and to the two oil holes.

McGILL SPHERE-ROL Steel CageSteel Cage
The spacing provided by the heat treated steel cage contributes to the high speed capabilities and provides a lubricant reservoir within the bearing envelope.

McGILL SPHERE-ROL Inner Ring Raceway FlangesInner Ring Raceway Flanges
Provide roller guidance and surface to support retainer. The raceway width, or distance between the two flanges, also helps define a designed endplay in the bearing. For applications requiring compensation for shaft growth due to linear thermal expansion, SPHERE-ROL bearings are available with increased internal endplay identified by the expansion type (E) option.

Misalignment Capability
As a result of the design geometry, SPHERE-ROL® bearings offer up to ±3˚misalignment in unsealed versions.

Combination Load Capacity
The SPHERE-ROL® bearing design allows for high radial load capacity and the ability to accommodate a thrust load in combination with a radial load. Thrust load capability is proportional to the amount of radial load and pure thrust loads are not recommended. Typically a ratio less than .20 of axial to radial loads (Fa/Fr < .20) is appropriate for SPHERE-ROL bearings, equivalent load formulas specified in the Engineering Section of this catalog.

Options of McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings:

Tapered bore bearings - KMcGILL Spherical Roller Bearing K Tapered Bore

Load ratings can exceed similar bearings by as much as 17%, and they can support combination radial and thrust loads with ease. Limiting speeds may be up to 15% above comparable bearings. The unsealed types may accommodate as much as ±3° misalignment, while the sealed types can handle up to ±2°. McGill's SPHERE-ROL bearings are dimensionally interchangeable with standard 2-row spherical roller bearings, offering the design engineer an effective bearing design that improves performance.

McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SPHERE-ROL provides bearings with a tapered bore for applications using tapered adapter sleeves or tapered shaft seats. This can simplify installation of SPHERE-ROL bearings, eliminating the need for bearing heating or complicated press-fitting techniques. Standard tapered adapter sleeves, together with required lock nuts and washers designated by the applicable suffix. Individual components may be ordered by part number, or the complete tapered bore bearing and hardware can be identified by the suffix letter "A" after the bearing number. The standard bore taper is 1" per 12" of diameter, with tapered bore bearings designated by the suffix letter "K" after the basic bearing number.

In mounting tapered bore bearings, the bearing bore is clamped against the taper of the split adapter sleeve or the tapered shaft seat by a lock nut. A tighter fit can be obtained by screwing the lock nut further so as to increase the bearing's axial movement along the taper. Because it is often necessary for this type of installation to take up more internal clearance than usual, special internal tolerances are available. It’s crucial to ensure that the internal clearance is optimally adjusted, as excessive reduction can lead to bearing overheating in various applications.

For adapter-mounted tapered bore bearings, McGILL recommends a mounting procedure that does not require feeler gauges or any special measuring procedures.

Expansion-type SPHERE-ROL bearings - E
McGILL Spherical Roller Bearing E Expansion Type
When an application requires the bearing to accept internal expansion (float), an alternate SPHERE-ROL bearing option is available. This “expansion-type” SPHERE-ROL bearing is specified by adding the suffix letter “E” immediately after the diameter clearance designation (i.e., SB-22319-C3E).

In most applications where two bearings share a shaft, one must be “fixed” while the other is permitted to “float” within the housing.

NYLAPLATE® Seals - S or SS
McGILL Nylateplate
NYLAPLATE seals have low running friction and various materials can be used for sealing, depending on the resistance required to a variety of contaminants and thermal conditions. SPHERE-ROL bearings which are sealed with Nylaplate have the suffix “S” for single sealed and “SS” for those with double NYLAPLATE seals. When the bearing is a tapered bore model with a single seal, "S" indicates that the seal is on the smaller bore side, while "SL" indicates the seal is on the larger bore side.

Sealed SPHERE-ROL bearings supplied with standard NYLAPLATE seals by McGill should not be operated above 300°F. For operating temperatures above that, other seal materials can be furnished-(request “TS,” “TSS,” or “TSL”).

Sealed SPHERE-ROL bearings should not experience operating misalignments greater than ±2° for optimum seal effectiveness. Installation and handling misalignments should not exceed ±3° to avoid seal displacement. These sealed bearings feature snap rings positioned in the outer ring to limit permissible bearing misalignment and maintain seals in their correct position.

NYLAPLATE High Temperature Seal – TS or TSSMcGILL Nylaplate High Temperature

Combination labyrinth and contact seal for operating temperatures up to 450°F. Bearing misalignment should not to exceed ±2˚ in operation for best seal performance. Bearings with this seal option will include a high temperature grease fill designated by the VA grease suffix in the part number When ordering seals for tapered bore (-K option) bearing, indication of which side to be sealed must be provided. The “L” in the option suffix defines a seal installed on larger bore diameter side of the taper, no indication will default to seal installed on small bore side.

LAMBDA® Seals - YS or YSS or YSL
McGILL Lambda Seal
The LAMBDA sealing system is an optional seal configuration available in McGill's SPHERE-ROL bearings for severe contamination applications. These can include high levels of moisture such as direct water splashes, and/or dirt and dust infiltrated environments. This sealing method combines the standard NYLAPLATE seal functionality along with an added contact seal lip-wiping effectiveness, forming the LAMBDA sealing solution. Specify "YS", "YSS", or "YSL".

LAMBDA sealed McGILL Spherical Roller Bearings SPHERE-ROL must not be operated at misalignment angles exceeding ±1° and to achieve best seal performance, operational misalignment must not exceed ±1/2°. The LAMBDA seal must not be used above 300°F.

Diametral Clearance

SPHERE-ROL® bearings are available in internal diametral clearance ranges identified as C2, Standard, C3 and C4. The internal diametral clearances are progressively less than the Standard, while C3 and C4 are progressively looser than Standard. Similarly, four internal clearance ranges are available for tapered bore SPHERE-ROL® bearings. Each of these ranges is somewhat looser than the corresponding cylindrical bore bearing internal diametral clearance range, because of the need to accommodate a somewhat tighter fit with the tapered bore mounting arrangement. The following two charts give the internal diametral clearance ranges normally available with SPHERE-ROL® bearings from McGill. Stock bearings having standard diametral clearance will not be identified by special marking; however, the C2, C3 and C4 clearances will be identified on the bearing inner ring face, following the basic bearing number.

Matched Bearings – DS

When two SPHERE-ROL bearings are installed with the distance between both bearing less than the width of one bearing, it is recommended the bearings be diametrically matched to prevent unequal load sharing. The option, matches OD and ID tolerances, and Diametral Clearance with high point of runout indicated on the bearing faces. For more information and matching factors please review the engineering section for matched bearings.
