SealMaster Bearings

SealMaster Bearings

History:

Sealmaster®  (A Regal Rexnord Brand) ball bearings first appeared in 1935. The bearing inserts were manufactured in an outside plant and assembled into housings at the Stephens-Adamson plant in Aurora.

By 1946, demand was so great that Stephens-Adamson created a new building specifically for the production of Sealmaster ball bearings. This new plant was near the original Stephens-Adamson location. Several innovations were responsible for the success of the Sealmaster bearing, thanks to Mr. Shafer:

  • A locking pin and dimple assembly that keeps the outer race from rotating and ensures proper lubrication.
  • A brass retainer that tracks on a land, minimizing ball wear.
  • A felt-lined flinger seal that provides exceptional protection against contaminants.
  • The ball path of the inner race is zone-hardened, while the extended portion is soft for easy drilling and tapping the set-screw holes that hold the unit in place against the shaft.

Sealmaster's expansion persisted and created a new plant and office on a 40-acre parcel of land at the eastern boundary of Aurora, IL, in 1966. Three years afterwards, in 1969, the Borg-Warner Corporation of Chicago purchased Stephens-Adamson Co. and brought it into the Morse® Chain Division headquarters in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1898, Morse specialized in manufacturing bicycle and motor drive chains, and its operations grew along with the automobile industry, becoming a leader in automotive engine timing. Morse also invented the HYVO chain, which is used in the drivetrain of several cars globally.

Power Transmission Solutions® welcomed Morse Industrial in 1983 to its expanding lineup, creating two mounted bearing product lines: Browning® and Sealmaster. Due to Federal Trade Commission guidelines, Power Transmission Solutions divested the Browning mounted ball bearing business to Hub City. To keep the Browning name, they introduced an all-new product line. Browning Manufacturing, formerly The Ohio Valley Pulley Works, founded in 1896, opened its product line to:

  • V-belts
  • Sheaves
  • Bushings
  • Sprockets
  • Gears
  • Speed reducers

By the year 1986, Power Transmission Solutions had devised a plan to consolidate its many power transmission companies into one single company by the name Power Transmission Corporation. Power Transmission's bearing product line currently includes both mounted and unmounted products. The unmounted range consists of Sealmaster Ball and Roller bearings, Browning Ball and Roller bearings, and System Plast® Ball and Rod Ends, while the unmounted range consists of Spherical Bearings, McGill® Aircraft and Needle Roller Bearings, Cam Followers, Rollway® Angular Contact, Tapered Roller Thrust, Extra Capacity Metric Cylindrical Roller, and Spherical Roller Bearings.

Today, Sealmaster is still dedicated to performance product improvement and is ready for growth in a number of specialty lines. They are also committed to the creation of new solutions, like the corrosion-resistant beverage.

SealMaster Bearings Products:
